The Puritans Story of Transition

Happy Thanksgiving!

As Thanksgiving comes upon us, we recall the story of the Puritans, who left Europe to change their lives to live in a new place in a new world. They were motivated to make this change because they were dissatisfied with the beliefs of the Church of England, wanting to live their lives according to their Puritan beliefs. Here they made a decision, the first step in the letting go process of a transition journey. The decision that was inviting them to seek new and better opportunities.

After they resolved to let go of their increasingly difficult lives in Europe, a group boarded a ship called the Mayflower and headed to their goal of a new beginning in the promise land. This step was the beginning of their neutral zone sometimes called the messy middle.

Initially there were two (2) ships to set out on the voyage. The second ship called the Speedwell began to experience several problems. First, a leak in the boat needed repair, then another leak and then a third leak. They had no other choice but to abandon the journey. Sometimes this can happen in a neutral zone. The passageway becomes obstructed with so many problems and issues that people abandon ship. The Mayflower set sail, continuing the expedition. It was September of 1620. The first half of the voyage was over calm seas and under pleasant skies.

Then a second wave of chaos and confusion arose. The weather changed. Storms arose and with waves hurling themselves against the ship. In these rough waters the little boat was tossed about. There were about 120 people cramped in a small space with 5 foot ceilings, at the bottom of the boat. The waves were crashing against the top side of the ship. A child was born and miraculously only 1 person died.

They arrived in America in November. They were not done with the neutral zone yet. Encountering the harsh winters of the Northeast region, they were ill prepared to deal with it. Having brought with them seeds to plant food, tools to build houses, and supplies of food, they were unable to use any of it with the frozen ground. Their clothing was worthless in that it did not stand up to the cold weather conditions. Where they came from in Europe was a bit milder.

We know how this story ends eventually they make it to their new beginning with the help of the native Indians. It is here they celebrate their new beginning with gratitude to God and the Indians that helped them. Today it is observed as Thanksgiving Day.
